Powerflushing
With todays modern and increasingly efficient condensing boilers the cleanliness of the water passing through them is extremely important.
This is often overlooked by homeowners, who without further knowledge wouldnt realise the problems a sludge filled system can cause.
What is a powerflush?
A powerflush consists of connecting our dedicated flushing machine to your heating system and flushing through with chemicals and fresh water.
Attached to our system is another invaluable filter called a 'magnaclean' a large magnet which boosts the flushing performance by removing metal deposits a lot quicker from the system.
Why do i need a powerflush?
- Firstly and most importantly its recommended by boiler manufacturers to have a powerflush before fitting a new boiler, otherwise it can invalidate the guarantee at their discretion.
- Modern boilers have much smaller waterways than older boilers and can become easily blocked if the system is sludgy which in turn will reduce boiler performance, effiency, and may lead to faults.
- At Radmasters Services we can test the water quality in your heating system upon quotation to quickly and easily tell you if its needed.
- Symptoms of a sludged/scaled system may include cold spots along the bottom of radiators, a kettling noise from your boiler or in some cases radiators struggling to heat up at all.
Where has the sludge/scale come from?
- Sludge can form in your system if the water is left untreated and basically rusts the radiators and forms deposits around the entire system.
- Scale tends to form in much older cast iron boilers and is caused in the same way but will leave your boiler making a 'kettling' noise or a popping.
- This can occur purely if there is no inhibitor in your heating system to prevent rust but also can be due to a poorly installed system, this may draw air into the system or draw in fresh water constantly.
How long does it take to powerflush?
A typical system consisting of 10 radiators will generally take a day
What is inhibitor?
Every time a system has been flushed or drained the fresh water in the system needs to be treated to prevent rust, inhibitor does exactly that.
Inhibtor also contains antifreeze so if your system is left off for long periods in cold weather it will help stop any potential damage.
Facts
- Generally if you have rusty radiators and leaking radiator valves its because your system is untreated and may be full of sludge.
- Underfloor heating can also suffer from clogging not from sludge but from algae. Every underfloor heating system we install is dosed with chemicals to prevent this along with inhibitor to protect the rest of the system.
- Sludge in a system generally causes the failure of zone valves which control the flow of water to your heating and hot water, the sludge deposits put strain on the valves as they open and close.
- This is also true with heating pumps as they have to work harder to pump round thicker clogged water.
